During medical school I started following a low carb/high fat diet, and immediately started feeling better. In fact, I felt the healthiest I have ever been in my life. This contradicted with what I was being taught about the dangers of saturated fat and cholesterol. So I did my own research:
- High cholesterol or LDL levels are not associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease
- Higher LDL levels in the elderly associated with longevity
- Cholesterol lowering drugs (statins) have minimal benefit in reducing cardiovascular risk
- Their side effects are extensive, including dementia, muscle weakness, heart failure, neurological diseases
