Are Sunglasses Bad for you?

Should you use sunglasses?

Sunglasses block infrared and UV light from reaching your eyes

Your body requires exposure to the full spectrum of light as a signal to synthesize important hormones such as melatonin, glucocorticoids, and sex hormones

Also direct light exposure to your retina, dilates its blood vessels. This leads to increased blood flow, which rejuvenates it and is protective to your vision

Sun light to your eyes is required to generate melanin. Melanin is the “tan pigment” that darkens your skin and prevents you from getting sunburned

So by using sunglasses you are increasing your risk of sunburn

Avoid using sunglasses if possible. Exceptions include scenarios where you are looking directly at the sun and have a task to perform, such as skiing, driving or operating machinery.
